About

I’m Alison Kung, a photographer, researcher, and writer exploring how people, places, and cultural memory shape one another. My work moves between image-making, academic inquiry, and public storytelling, but the thread is constant: I’m drawn to the fleeting, the unspoken, and the ways we engage with the past, especially what is fading, forgotten, or lost.

With a background in Art History, Politics & Public Administration, and Global Creative Industries, I approach photography not just as an aesthetic practice but as a form of human and cultural encounter. I believe portraiture is fundamentally about character and presence — how light, gesture, and attention reveal truths that words often can’t. I’m interested in the quiet moments where emotion surfaces, where connection becomes visible, where someone’s essence briefly comes into view.

Beyond photography, my research focuses on heritage, urban change, and collective memory. I am currently developing academic work on heritage and urban planning under the supervision of Dr. Yi Samuel Chen at the University of Hong Kong. Previously, I contributed to The Future of “Made in Hong Kong”, a transdisciplinary project with HKU and Arup Foresight, examining how fading cultural symbols, such as neon signage, can be reimagined through design, policy, and innovation.

My practice is also shaped by experiences across museums, arts festivals, and cultural organisations, where I’ve explored how audiences encounter stories, images, and histories in public space. These roles continue to inform how I think about cultural change, public imagination, and the narratives we build around what we choose to preserve.

This website brings together the different facets of my work — photography, research, writing, and ongoing projects — all rooted in a curiosity about how we see, remember, and make meaning in a rapidly shifting world.
